How do you breathe new life into a three-generation family-owned retail business? Varsity Army Navy, located in the heart of a busy Bronx, New York, neighborhood, needed an answer. And at Red Ski Creative, we were happy to provide a solution with a retail brand reboot.

This classic brick-and-mortar army/navy store enjoys a unique position since they contract with New York City to supply uniforms (including badges and other necessities) to police officers, firefighters, sanitation workers, and other professional service members. Still, Varsity needed to better connect with their most loyal customers. To keep biz thriving in a crowded retail marketplace, they wanted to increase awareness of both their uniforms and workwear (coveralls, work boots, etc.) and start fresh in their new location just a block away.

To modernize the brand, RSF, set about creating a hipper logo, more current log. We also dreamed up the tag line– “Clothing hard workers since 1938” — to appeal to this store’s core audience, a strong and resilient demographic.

Beyond logo design and tagline development, we worked on Varsity’s sign design and an overall retail brand strategy that celebrates Varsity’s 80-year-history. After all, Varsity was started by the current owners’ grandfather, and part of our reboot was to shine a spotlight American Dream storyline to keep this family business thriving for generations to come!
